Vietnam - year rice export target kept
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has just decided to keep the rice export target for this year at 5 million tons so as to earn export revenue of around US$1.4 billion.

In Circular 1469/TTg-NN dated September 19, the Prime Minister required the Ministry of Trade to coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Vietnam Foods Association to set up monthly delivery schedules on the basis of quarterly ones.

Until the end of August, rice exporters had won contracts with a total volume of 4.5 million tons. Of which, 3.5 million tons had been exported, fulfilling 75% of the year target, bringing about US$1 billion. The left volume would be delivered from September through the end of the year.

With the Prime Minister’s direction, exporters can only sign more contracts with only about 500.000 tons. In addition to 700,000 tons in current contracts, which have not been delivered, exporters will deliver 1.2 million tons of rice from now to the end of the year.

According to the Ministry of Trade, rice prices in Asian market are rising as supplies reduce in some large exporting countries like India or Pakistan. Vietnam’s rice export prices have also increased by USU$4 – 6 per ton.
