La rice production drops sharply
Louisiana's rice production is expected to be down sharply from last year: high fuel and energy costs prompted farmers to plant fewer acres in the staple crop.

Farmers this year plan to harvest just 345,000 acres of rice — the smallest acreage since 1914, when producers brought in 320,000 acres, Louisiana's branch of the National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Tuesday.

Production is expected to hit 19.8 million hundredweight, down slightly from an agency estimate last month and sharply from last year's total of about 31 million hundredweight, the agency said. National rice production also is expected to be lower than last year's, the agency said.

Diesel fuel, fertilizer and other costs make the crop an expensive one, said Chuck Wilson, director of Arkansas field services for the USA Rice Federation.

"Because of that, there were a lot of farmers not able to get financed or who decided the input costs were too great to grow as much acreage as they had in the past," he said in a phone interview.

In some rice-growing regions, U.S. farmers planted land traditionally used for rice in other crops, such as soybeans, which are less expensive to grow, he said.

"They're trying to hold out in very difficult economic times," Wilson said. "A lot of farmers are trying not to go out of business."
