India said to buy 1.67 million tonnes wheat: US traders
US grain traders said on Friday there was widespread talk that India bought 1.67 million tonnes of wheat it had tendered for, but the amount did not include supplies from the United States, reports Reuters.

The Australian Wheat Board was said to have won the lion's share of the business, grabbing 550,000 tonnes, the traders said. Other sellers were said to be Glencore, Toepfer and Concordia.

"I'm not surprised they did not buy US wheat because of phytosanitary issues," a trader said, adding that India had required the wheat to be free of weed seed.Another trader said he expected the successful bidders, other than the AWB, to supply India with a significant amount of Black Sea wheat.

He said the AWB, Australia's monopoly exporter, would likely supply India with its soft wheat.Traders were unable to confirm any of the sales.India, through its State Trading Corp, set the tender last month in a bid to boost domestic stockpiles following a poor crop this year. Traders in India said the STC asked the Indian government to buy the entire 1.67 million tonnes it had tendered for because of concerns prices could rise.

India's food ministry, which has final say in the purchase, was examining state-run STC's recommendation, the traders said, adding that offers from the AWB, Glencore, Toepfer and Concordia were among those being considered
