No need to import wheat, says Turkish Grain Board
Daily news
Ismail Kemalošlu, chairman of the Turkish Grain Board (TMO), has stated that Turkey will not need to import wheat for domestic consumption this year. However, he added that a certain amount might be imported for the use of producers who export their products as processed goods.

Evaluating the current situation for the Anatolia news agency, Kemalošlu said that this year's corn crop was also sufficient for Turkey's needs. Corn imports would be banned this year as a consequence, although the measure could be partially lifted if there was an unexpected shortage of production in the domestic market.

Based on May estimates, Kemalošlu said that record growth in wheat production had been forecast for this year but that due to drought and extreme heat over the summer there had in fact been a decrease in the harvest of 2 to 3 million tons. Despite this, the production and quality were adequate for Turkey's domestic market, he said.

Reiterating that Turkey was one of the world's major exporters of grain, he said that last year 2 million tons of flour and a significant amount of pasta were exported, with the TMO selling 3 million tons of grain products to exporters.
