Kazakhstan to form three transport corridors
President Nursultan Nazarbayev has approved a strategy of Kazakh territorial development until 2015.

The strategy was drafted in conformity with the March 1 presidential address to the nation, says a commentary by the presidential administration's social and economic analysis department.

"The strategy defines key areas of territorial development, including the formation of an economic space, the displacement of the population, and the infrastructural support to territorial clusters," it says.

The strategy is aimed at the efficient positioning of Kazakhstan in the regional and world economy; efficient territorial organization of the country; efficient economic organization of regions; better environmental status; and institutional support to territorial development, it says.

By the year 2015, Kazakhstan aims to be positioned on the world market as "a large producer and supplier of raw materials, grain and processed products" and "a trans-continental bridge between the European, Asia-Pacific and South Asian economic systems."

The strategy provides for the formation of three main transport and communications corridors in Kazakhstan.

"There will be northern, southern and central strategic axes of territorial development. They will connect new and existing regional and sub-regional territorial economic systems, as well as isolated economic compounds and territories lying in between," it says.

The central axis "will be the core of the national economic space, as it will connect the southern and northern development axes in the center of the country and go between Astana, Karaganda and Almaty, with extensions to Balkhash and Dostuk and to China and Zheskazgan. Later on, the axis will extend to the seaports of West Kazakhstan," the commentary runs.

"Dynamically developing cities, large economic centers of territorial economic systems that are competitive in the world and both regional and national divisions of labor, will become key links of development axes," it says.
