No immediate plan to import wheat: India
NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 2: India does not have plans to issue any fresh tender for importing wheat, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said on Saturday.

"Nothing more is planned," Pawar said when asked if any wheat tenders were in the pipeline. He did not elaborate on a timeframe. The State Trading Corp. (STC) has already done something," he said.

Following a poor crop, India, for the first time in six years, began buying wheat in March to augment government buffer stocks. Wheat stocks were estimated at 7.33 million tonnes on August 1, down from 12.9 million tonnes a year ago.

The government said on Friday prices of essential food articles such as pulses and wheat in India had "generally stabilised" following a series of steps taken by authorities.

Six shipments of around 300,000 tonnes of wheat have been received by the state-run Food Corporation of India by August 27, it said.

STC has contracted wheat imports of 3.8 million tonnes since March and this week floated another import tender for the purchase of another 1.67 million tonnes.

Authorities are confident wheat prices would remain at reasonable levels due to the rapid pace of imports.

A comfortable stock level would help the government keep a check on prices, if necessary, during winter when demand peaks and prices tend to jump.
