China Typhoon Impact on Rice
Five strong typhoons and tropical storms have landed in south and southeast China since May 2006. Four of these four strong typhoons brought heavy rainfalls and resulted in landslides in Fujian, Hunan, Guangdong, and Guangxi provinces. Despite recent reports of damage to properties and agricultural crops, the impact on early rice in these provinces is estimated to be insignificant. However, the planting of late rice will be delayed. China’s National Natural Disaster Alleviation Committee’s (CNNDAC, a Cross Agency Coordinating Office including MOA and NSB, affiliated to Ministry of Civil Affairs) released Monthly Disaster Analysis and Evaluation Reports for May, June and July, showing the following impact on crops nationwide:

According to agricultural officials, the rice yield will be measured at average levels in 2006. The acreage is estimated to be 3% higher than the previous year and the overall rice output is estimated at 182 MMT, 2% higher than the previous year. China’s Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) did not have detailed information about the damage to individual crops. CNNDAC also said further information, such as the affected area for a specific crop in a particular province, was not available. Furthermore, CNNDAC explained that the typhoon-affected areas in Fujian, Hunan and Guangdong are hilly. Had the typhoons hit the plains, the damage to the rice crop would have been far more serious. The water levels at Yangtze River and most of its tributaries remained below danger levels, thus the crops along the river were not affected.
