Vietnam premium rice export target of 1 mln tons elusive
The government had drawn up a plan in April for the purpose and assigned seven Mekong Delta provinces – Dong Thap, An Giang, Tien Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Kien Giang and Can Tho – to grow the required volumes.

Each was asked to set aside at least 30,000 ha of land for premium varieties in the 2006-07 winter-spring crop.

Things go awry

The seven provinces recently asked the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry to cut their targets complaining of a serious shortfall in premium grade rice seedlings and pest attacks.

While they could only procure around 7,500 tons of the almost 19,000 tons of seedlings required, diseases had swept six of the seven provinces in the last two months destroying 47,000 ha of rice, they said.

Besides, farmers have been wary of planting premium grades because of a lack of coordination with exporters. While the former are used to selling paddy right after harvest, the latter prefer to take cagey attitude to get the best prices.

The exporters have yet to announce what strains of rice they want and what prices they are willing to pay.

Tran Duc Tung, an expert in charge of rice exports at the ministry, said premium rice would fetch at least US$50 per ton more than normal varieties. Vietnam’s sells its 25 percent broken rice at $238 while its FOB rates for premium varieties are $340-370.

In the first half this year, the country exported 2.94 million tons worth $794 million, up 4.2% year-on-year.

Vietnam is one of the world’s largest exporters of the cereal.
