Russia's wheat prices keep rising on strong demand
Russia's wheat prices continue to rise amid strong demand from exporters. Prices in European Russia for feed wheat (5th class) were up 175 rubles per tonne on the week to 2,875 rubles per tonne (ex-warehouse) as of July 26, according to domestic analyst Sovecon.

Prices for superior 3rd class milling wheat amounted to 3,475 rubles per tonne, up 25 rubles per tonne on the week, and to 3,250 rubles per tonne for inferior 4th class milling wheat, or 50 rubles per tonne higher than a week before.

The price increases are very unusual for this time of the year, when prices usually decline due to arrival of volumes from the fresh harvest.

Exporters offer prices of around 3,200-3,500 rubles per tonne for 4th class wheat with delivery to the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk.

The current market situation makes intervention buying planned by the government unnecessary, analysts say. Russian officials have earlier indicated that the government would pay a maximum price of 3,100 rubles per tonne for the 3rd class wheat in the European part of Russia.

Last year, the government purchased 1.67 million tonnes of grain, of which 3rd class milling wheat accounted for 86%.

Russia's Agriculture Ministry expects the 2006 grain production at 70-73 million tonnes, down from 78 million tonnes in 2005.
