Calrose Medium Grain Market
Farm Trade
The weather continues to be a major concern. The record breaking temperatures and extended period of hot weather in California are having an effect on yields. Besides likely causing lodging like seen last year, the key time where hotness is an issue is pollination and we are into this period now. General calls for yields by experts have been 75-78 cwts/acre (we have thought 76), although any early rains would also pull this down and how much of an effect the heat will have is unknown. Overall, under the best of circumstances the crop is going to be limited much like 2005. Looking at the trading side of the equation, the market continues to struggle with buyers trying to walk the fine line of being short rice (some with no supplies for August or September) and yet trying to find a way to limp in to new crop (pushing out sales, pushing politics for export customers not to buy now, etc.). On the other hand, growers are reluctant to sell at lower levels but are getting pressure by redemption dates (mostly September 1), warehouse storage (ends August 31), and cash flow. It is a poker game of who is stronger. One key positive (that should be commended) to this is that warehouses are being rather reasonable on late season storage (most) offering month to month rates and giving growers a good amount of leeway. Additionally, the drought in Australia is becoming a major concern and is officially being called the third worst drought in the countries history. The rice growing region (Victoria and New South Wales) are being critically affected. Other than this, some rumors Turkey was in the market and may have done some business.
