One million tons quality rice exports for 2007
Despite a good supply of rice from the current summer-autumn crop harvest, local paddy prices and rice export indicator prices remained unexpectedly high, mainly because of strong export activities from outstanding sales. By July 7, Vietnam rice exports reached 2,781,500 metric tons, an increase of 4 percent compared with the same period last year.

The Government has passed a plan to export one million tons of high-grade rice for next year, said the Vietnam Food Association.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has allowed the Southern Food Corporation to increase exports to meet the increasing demand for high-grade rice, using five varieties – IR 64, OM 2517, OM 2717, VND95-20 and OMCS 2000.

The corporation said the plan will be implemented in seven provinces in the Mekong Delta – Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Can Tho, Soc Trang, Dong Thap and An Giang, during the 2006-2007 winter-spring crop.

Tran Duc Tung, an expert in charge of rice exports at the ministry, said high quality rice prices would be at least US$50 per ton more than normal rice varieties.

Vietnam’s 5% broken price is quoted at US$260 per ton, and 25% broken at US$238.

“The Mekong Delta has produced high quality rice for a long time, but with limited volumes,” he said. “This year Vietnam will export more than 100,000 tons of high quality rice.”

In January-June, the sector exported 2.94 million tons worth US$794 million, up 4.2% year-on-year.

The sector expects to ship about five million tons of rice this year, down by 200,000 tons from last year.
