Korea is Good fit for U.S., Cummings tells Koreans
Korean Broadcasting Association Producer-Correspondent Hyun Chul-suh this morning interviewed Bob Cummings, USA Rice VP for International Policy, about negotiations for a U.S.-Korea free trade agreement.
Korea is a wealthy country, Cummings explained, and the United States produces high quality rice. “Korea is a very good fit for us,” he said. Cummings acknowledged the cultural sensitivity associated with rice exports to Korea, but explained that for a free trade agreement to be successful, it must open trade in all areas.
U.S. rice does not pose a threat to Korean rice producers, Cummings said. Furthermore, the United States does not produce enough of the short and medium grain rice in demand in Korea to overwhelm that market.
When asked whether rice could be used as a weapon, Cummings emphasized that, “Food is not a weapon. That is a fundamental position of U.S. Agriculture.” He explained that U.S. agriculture has been relentless in seeking government to withdraw food embargos, citing trade that is now underway with Cuba after many years of U.S. government proscription.
