Calrose Medium Grain Market
Calrose Medium Grain Market,
The market continues to be rather quiet as the Memorial Day weekend (with several marketing players away) and very late planting have combined to take focus away from normal activities. The weather was rather cool over the last week but is now returning to more normal temperatures as the hot dry summer season starts to set in. Overall, this is going to be one of the latest plantings on record with nearly 1/3 of the crop that is going to be planted in June (rather unheard of) and some growers looking to plant well past ideal/logical dates (maybe even to mid-June). While this is going to heighten acres a bit (maybe even around 475-500,000), the whole crop is taking tremendous yield risk and an early fall would have more effect on production than it has ever had. On the other hand, the weather could deal a perfect hand from here on out which would give some help as the overall supply situation is going to remain very tight in the next twelve months. To a point, it is going to be a wait and see game as yield range could be dramatic, but we continue to see prices strong as the market supplies have a tough time meeting demand. The upcoming harvest looks to be a challenge as the tight harvest window (about ½ normal) will push the system to its maximum and allow the CA warehouse system to again show its high quality. As is the general statement goes, each rice crop year is unique unto itself. Changing to the trading side of the equation, prices continue to be indicated around the $6.00/cwt over mark as supplies remain low and general price direction (for basically all commodities) looks upward. It appears increases in milled rice (domestic) prices are not rationing demand with tightness remaining widespread throughout the valley. As some have put it, rice buying customers could be put on a quota and it will be more of a supply issue. Of interest, the new USDA attaché report shows that Taiwan is expected to import 127 TMT of milled rice (about 4.5 million cwts) in 2006 versus 21 TMT that was imported in 2005. Also, there has again resurfaced another round of market spin that Australia is going to be active in the coming marketing year.
