Calrose Medium Grain Market
Farm and Trade
The key item remains the very un-standard (wet) weather that continues to dictate this market. Due to this, USDA estimated that the crop is 37% completed versus a norm of 72% (i.e. crop is 35% behind) and last year's 69% completed. With 63% of the crop left to be planted in less than two weeks, this alone would have added serious question of how the crop is going to be put in before the last ideal date of June 1 or the logical cutoff date of June 5-7. Adding fuel to the fire, additional rains over the last few days have dropped an average of about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch (some growers getting as much as an inch and a half) in the growing region. Especially to those growers that got more precipitation, this is going to cause major issues but overall this will decrease dry down times and stop some growers from planting certain fields. The flip side to this is that some growers could choose to plant late and take major yield loss risk, but with the market really not showing it will reward the growers for planting and mother nature continuing to indicate a year of volatile weather, we have to believe logic will set in as June approaches and several fields are still left to plant.
