Calrose Medium Grain Market

All focus is really on production as tradable levels remain near $6.00/cwt over with growers wanting more. The lateness of planting is becoming a serious issue, although sunny weather over that last four weeks (see Graph below) has saved the crop from a complete disaster. Looking at USDA estimates as of May 14, 12% is said to be planted versus 50% last year at the same time and a five-year average of 52%, which puts us about 40% behind normal. If people who predict the weather can be believed, Friday to Monday scattered showers and lower temperatures are expected, which could cause issues in both time available to still put in 88% of the crop and the ability to get tractors in the field. Overall this is a year for experimentation, with growers making less field passes, skipping normal production steps (even spring till) and basically "shot-gunning" rice into the fields. Acres may increase a bit on sunny weather, but production is likely going to take a hit on yield. Looking at USDA's new estimates for 2006 (see below), it appears that they are on the very high side for production. Even with this best case scenario (which is ridiculously unlikely), a reduction in exports is still needed to make the balance sheet work. More likely you are going to get around 41-44 million cwts production and supplies will be greatly rationed throughout the coming year.
