Calrose Medium Grain Market
The keys to this market continues to be the very tight supplies due to low production in 2005, the wet weather pushing new crop supplies into November, and the poor weather causing significant production issues for 2006. On this, the cash market continues to be strong trading at $6.00/cwt over loan and will likely stay at this level until growers loose interest before moving higher. To a large portion, it is a sellers market right now with only about 3-4 million cwts still in first hands. There has been a good deal of excitement in California as the sun has come out allowing the significant amount of field work and small (albeit very limited) planting to occur. While the shift in weather has helped and pushed a lot of tractors in the field, there is a big difference between intentions to plant and harvested acres even if additional rains do not hit the rice valley. On this, CA planting is said by USDA to be 4% done as of May 7th, compared to 26% done last year and a 5 year average of 31%. Due to the late start and some ground just being opened, there will be a good amount planted in June (indicating lower yields) and we are getting reports of growers that have ruled out planting (many taking preventive planting insurance). On the other hand, there is some question if non-standard acres will be planted to cushion some of this. With price indications below cost ($6.25/cwt over at lower yields) & one of the latest starts on record, we have to believe planting will turn out on the lower side. On the trade side of the equation, Taiwan will in the market in the next few weeks and Japan's Agriculture Ministry will buy 25 TMT of rice (SBS system) on May 26
