South Korea started its first online auction
South Korea started its first online auction for rice imported from China on Wednesday, but received no winning bids, a state marketing corporation said.

The Agriculture and Fisheries Marketing Corp. (AFMC) said all bids for 2,100 tons of first-grade Chinese rice were below the asked price.

"Only three distributors wanted to buy a meager 30 tons, but all the bids submitted were below the asking price," an AFMC official said.

The main reasons were criticism of quality and farmers' protests that make big retailers shy away from foreign rice, he said.

Retailers should pay 25,000 won (US$26.70) for a 20-kilogram sack of Chinese rice, way below the average bidding price of 31,000 won for U.S. Calrose rice sold last month.

The official also said not a single sack of Calrose rice was sold at the latest auction, following no sales on April 26. More than 1,300 tons of U.S. rice arrived in late march, but overall sales have been disappointing.

Starting next week, online bidding will be held on Tuesday and Thursday instead of once a week, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said.

Under a pact signed with nine rice-exporting countries in late 2004, Seoul is obliged to import a fixed amount of rice until 2014, 10 per cent to 30 per cent of which is to be sold directly to consumers.

This year, South Korea plans to sell 22,557 tons of rice from the United States, China, Thailand and Australia to domestic consumers by June. Seoul will decide after July on the timing for an additional 34,429 tons that the agreement requires to be imported by the end of the year.
