Thai Export Prices
Market Tone

Export prices were mixed in response to the fluctuation of the Thai baht and domestic prices. Exporters are facing difficulties in quotations due to current exchange rate fluctuation (around 37.2 – 37.7 baht/U.S$). Also, exporters expected that Thai rice exports will likely shrink to 7.2 million tons in CY 2006, as compared to the government target of 7.5 million tons, if the Thai baht remains strong at 37-38 baht/U.S.$ over the next two months. Current Thai rice exports are reportedly limited to premium white rice exports to Iraq and Iran. Thai rice exports to Iran are expected to reach a record of over 600,000 tons in CY 2006, as the Iranian Government is reportedly building up rice stocks in anticipation of possible United Nations’ sanctions. Meanwhile, domestic prices of Thai white rice remain high because the Government still holds huge intervention stocks. The Government is reportedly expected to release only old-crop fragrant rice of around 400,000 tons to domestic and export markets by the end of this month. As a result, domestic prices of fragrant rice will likely ease slightly from the surge in the previous week.
