Commerce Ministry says new Thai rice stocks of highest quality
BANGKOK, May 6 (TNA) - The Ministry of Commerce will join with commercial rice exporters in telling overseas importers that Thai rice, in particular Thai jasmine rice (khao hom mali or fragrant rice), exported by Thailand is from new stock, and that the problem of foreign substances having been found in rice shipped earlier is now solved.

Caretaker Deputy Commerce Minister Preecha Laohapongchana said here on Friday that he had ordered Foreign Trade Department officials to cooperate with local rice exporters in explaining to foreign importers that rice shipped from Thailand is from new premium quality stock.

Touching on the current appreciation of the Thai baht, Mr. Preecha said he believed the volatility of the Thai currency should return to normal soon, which would bring rice prices lower.

Thailand during the first four months of this year shipped 2.38 million tonnes of rice worth about US$757 million with an average price of US$318 per tonne, compared to US$305 during the corresponding period of 2005.

The ministry expects to export about 550,000 tonnes of rice in May on high expectations of rising demand for Thai rice in some African countries.

Negotiations are continuing with Iran for the sale of 300,000 tonnes in a transaction which could be sealed next week.
