Viet Nam Mekong Delta leads other localities in rice production
Can Tho (VNA) - More than 30 years after the national reunification, the Mekong Delta has been the national standout in production of rice, fruits and poultry products.

Boasting 3.9 million ha of farmland, or 52 percent of the country's total farm acreage, the region produces 50 percent of the national rice output and contributes 93 percent of the total rice export volume.

The Mekong delta has recorded an average annual increase of 11 percent in its rice output over recent years, much higher than the national average of 7.8 percent and the Red River Delta's level of 5.35 percent.

At present, the region allocates an area for growing high-quality rice, which covers the Plain of Reeds, the Long Xuyen quadrangle and the western part of the Hau river, with the aim of supplying more than 4 million tonnes of high-quality rice annually for export.

Besides rice as the main staple, the Mekong Delta has also focused on developing orchards. The region has more than 273,000 ha of orchards, accounting for around 36.5 percent of the country's fruit tree-growing area, which produce as many as 3 million tonnes of fruit annually.

The region's other strength lies in animal husbandry, with its pork output making up nearly 24 percent of the national pork output and poultry products, making up 30 percent of the country's volume
