Brazilian farmers to reduce by around 10% their planting of wheat
Farmers are discouraged with the low wheat prices, quoted at an average R$18 per sack, 25% less than the minimum price of R$24 established by the government. "We are going to plant oats in part of the area and rent out another portion for pasture," said farmers.

The area planted in wheat could drop 8% to 10%, according to estimates by Safras & Mercado, to 1.97 million hectares. "This deals with the initial projection. The area will depend on the price of wheat by the beginning of the planting, of farmers´ income from the soybeans that is being harvested now, and the variation of the exchange," said Safras & Mercado analyst Elcio Bento. He noted that the farmers are decapitalized after two crops of low returns, which will also result in less being invested in the fields and in less production. Brazil produced 4.873 million tonnes of wheat in the 2005/06 crop year, according to Safras & Mercado. In Paraná state, the decline will be 19%, to 1.033 million hectares, according to the estimate of the Department of Rural Economy (Deral), linked to the Paraná State Secretariat of Agriculture. Yesterday, a sack of wheat was traded at R$19.40 in the state, 7% less than one year ago. "Farmers face low prices and a lack of product liquidity," said Deral agronomist Otmar Hubner. For lack of demand, Gaucho farmer Vanderlei Basegio, of Passo Fundo and Coxilha, did not sell 12,000 sacks of wheat from the past crop, including 9,000 for seeds.
