Rice plantings put on hold in California
Forecasters aren't expecting relief any time soon.
Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Sacramento are predicting rain to fall nearly every day through next Tuesday as storms moving in from the Pacific barrel through Northern California.

According to unofficial Appeal-Democrat records, by this time last March it had rained 2.11 inches in Marysville, an amount that accumulated over seven separate days. This year, it has rained 4.8 inches over 16 days.

That's creating trouble for rice production, said Bransford, who manages about 800 acres of rice fields near Williams.

The period of October through March can be considered a rice farmer's off-season. Normally by this time of year, Bransford said, work centers on drying and tilling the soil, prepping it for planting around the beginning of May.

But with the beginning of April likely to come and go with more rain on the way, it's unclear when any of that will work will be done, he said. And the weather has been unpredictable like this for the past several years.

“I don't know what normal is anymore,” he said. “Mother Nature just does her thing, and we have to adapt.”

Most of the fields in the Mid-Valley are drenched in standing water, but down closer to the Sutter Bypass near the Sutter and Sacramento County lines, fields are under 6 feet of water or more.

“They're completely under water,” Bransford said.
