Statement of Dispute Resolution with Turkey Is Premature
A Turkish statement in a wire story today that Turkey has addressed U.S. concerns at the heart of a World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement case announced Feb. 6 might have been premature.
In a statement today to Reuters, Turkey’s State Minister for Foreign Trade Kursad Tuzmen said after a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Rob Portman, “There won’t be any problem on rice with Turkey and the United States.”
“Also, I asked there must not be a panel (ruling) issued ... at the WTO for this issue,” the Turkish minister said in Washington. The issue “is already resolved,” the minister said. “Turkey has made a proposal for how to resolve this dispute,” a USTR spokeswoman said when USA Rice Daily asked her about the report. “We have just received the proposal and are studying it. It would be premature to say that we have already resolved the dispute,” she said.
“We look forward to USTR’s assessment of any proposal Turkey may have provided the United States,” said Bob Cummings, USA Rice Federation VP for International Policy.
No details are available on how the Turkish government intends to solve the problem. Turkey’s domestic rice market is forecast to be worth more than $200 million in 2006.
