Calrose Medium Grain Market,
Farm And Trade
At this point, a big crop looks statistically unlikely to near impossible. While weather is a chaotic animal to predict, the long-term rain cycle (into April and May) shows consistent precipitation into the normal planting season. This is highlighted by another inch of rain in the last 24 hours. Overall, the trends show more wetness than lasts year's tough production season (causing late/decreased planting, by-passes to be flooded, some prevent planting, and lower yield), which in most players minds this equates to much less production. Additionally, the lack of true price direction (with buyers trying not to offer and low-ball price guarantees) is also a second factor taking down production. As many growers have put it over the last few weeks, why take the risk of growing another crop with low yields, unknown/volatile prices, deal with market frustration, and higher input costs when I can guarantee profits through other commodities or other payments (like preventive planting and government subsidies). Added all together, my expectation for new crop is production lower than the current crop based on wetter weather and unstable market conditions.
