US rice arrives in SKorea amid tight security
SEOUL (AFX) - The first shipment of foreign rice for sale to South Korean consumers has arrived in the southern port of Busan amid tight security as farmers protested the imports, officials said.

The agriculture ministry said 1,372 tons of US rice were unloaded at the port, the first shipment of foreign rice for direct consumer sale as part of an agreement signed in 2004, Agence France-Presse reported.

US rice costs about 560 usd a ton, compared with 1,500 for the same quality of South Korean rice.

However, South Korean consumers will not benefit from the price difference because the government, which has bought up all the imported US rice, intends to sell it on to distributors at auctions at about the same price as domestic rice, officials said.

Under the deal with rice-exporting countries, South Korea promised to import 22,557 tons of rice from the US, Australia, China and Thailand, but shipments were delayed because of demonstrations by farmers.
About 400 riot police were deployed at the main gate of the Busan port after dozens of farmers staged a sit-down protest, vowing to block the distribution of the US rice, newspapers said.
South Korean farmers strongly oppose the opening of agricultural markets, believing a flood of cheap imports will drive them out of business.
South Korea's parliament ratified a WTO-sponsored deal in November last year to raise its rice import quota to 7.96 pct of total domestic consumption.
In return, it won a 10-year grace period before it must open up fully to rice imports.
