Imported Rice for Direct Consumer Sale to Arrive in S. Korea
SEOUL, March 20 Asia Pulse - Imported rice that will be sold directly to consumers will arrive in South Korea this week, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said Monday. "The first shipment of 1,372 tons of U.S. rice will reach Busan harbor on Wednesday or Thursday," ministry spokesman Lee Yang-ho said.

The government is receiving applications from distributors who will be allowed to bid for the rice, he said, adding that the imported rice might hit the market early next month.

The shipment is the first of the 22,557 tons of rice South Korea was obliged to import from China, the United States, Thailand and Australia last year.

More could be imported in the latter half of this year since 22,557 tons is the quota that South Korea should have imported last year.

The volume represents 10 per cent of the total minimum market access quota of 225,575 tons that South Korea agreed to import for last year in a deal signed with nine rice-exporting countries in late 2004.

Seoul won the right to extend its tariff waiver on rice for another 10 years in exchange for gradually opening its domestic market to foreign rice from a 4 per cent share in 2004 to 7.96 per cent by the end of 2014.
Of the total, Chinese rice will account for 12,767 tons, followed by 5,504 tons from the U.S., 3,293 tons from Thailand and 993 tons from Australia.
Lee said rice that is being sold to food manufacturers has been arriving through the ports of Donghae and Mokpo, and a second shipment of 1,300 tons of rice for consumers should arrive next Monday.
