Government caps rice exports
The Government has capped rice exports for this year at five million tonnes in a move to ensure the nation’s food security.

The Ministry of Trade will co-operate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Viet Nam Food Association to govern the rice trade in quantity and price in order to ensure the needs of both the public and farmers are met.

Last year, the Government also capped rice exports, at 4.5 million tonnes. By November, however, rice export volume for the year had already reached nearly five million tonnes, with worth more than US$1.32 billion.

The Ministry of Trade immediately urged exporters to suspend the signing of new contracts to avoid further exceeding the target.

According to the Viet Nam Food Association (Vietfood), companies are anticipated to export around one million tonnes of rice in the first quarter of this year, a year-on-year increase of 6-7 per cent. Of this estimate, some 600,000 tonnes have been shipped so far.

Vietfood also reported that the total amount of rice ordered by foreign clients for this year has already hit two million tonnes. Vietfood recommended that exporters, in light of the restrictions on exports, should seek higher prices from export customers.

Exporters must reserve rice now that will be harvested during March-May. Vietfood has requested the Government to help them finance such purchases with loans through commercial banks.

The Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta, Viet Nam’s primary rice-growing region, is expected to harvest some 9.6 tonnes of rice in the winter-spring crop, up nearly 3 per cent from the corresponding period last year, reported the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
