World Market Tightens, rice trade to increase
FAPRI Report
A 2006 Iowa State University report from the Farm and Agricultural Policy Research Institute released yesterday afternoon projects the world rice trade to increase by an average 1.7 percent annually through 2015. That increase is coupled with the a projected decline in world per-capita consumption of rice “driven by urbanization, income growth, aging populations, and diet diversification in a number of Asian countries,” says the report.

Despite the expected growth, “rice trade as a share of world rice consumption is only 7.6 percent by 2015 and remains small relative to other grains,” the report says. It predicts a 26 percent growth in import demand from Africa and the Middle East over the next decade, with water constraints whetting import demand in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Ivory Coast. Indonesia and Bangladesh will account 27 percent of the projected growth in world rice imports. Other countries where significant import demand for rice will occur include the Philippines, Malaysia, Mexico and Turkey.
Record low world rice stocks are seen driving higher Thai export prices. “Continued higher prices in 2005 are expected to increase global rice area in 2006,” the report says.
