VietNam winter-spring rice crop
Recent rains have helped farmers in the north water their winter-spring rice crop, said the Irrigation Department, warning them not to drain water from the fields to cope with water shortage in the future.

According to reports, farmers in the north, excluding certain mountainous areas lacking in water, would successfully harvest the winter-spring crop this year.

The northern region is cultivating about 500,000 tonnes of rice in a total of 560ha, with Hai Duong Province already harvesting about 66,500 tonnes of rice, the department said. Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta provinces in the south, meanwhile, have harvested about 300,000 tonnes of rice for an average of 6-6.2 tonnes per ha.

An Giang Province in the south reported reaping 7 tonnes per hectare, and southern farmers were expected to sell their rice at VND3,000-3,200 per kilogram, for a profit of VND10-15 million per hectare.

According to the irrigation department, around 10,000ha of land in the southern Hau Giang Province was at the risk of droughts and another 5,000ha at the risk of salinity.

To cope with these problems during the next crop season, the province would invest VND7 billion in about 100 irrigation works during the dry season, from February to May. It would also guide local farmers to restructure crops to obtain better results.

Drought was also threatening Ca Mau Province, especially the U Minh Ha forest, with about 75,000ha of forest and many aquaculture farms facing shortage of water. Local authorities were increasing capacity and building new canals to cope with the drought situation.

Meanwhile, in the central region, Quang Tri and Quang Ngai provinces experienced land slides, with Quang Tri relocating 60 households in Tan Loc Commune in Cam Lo District to the Bong Moi resettlement area.

Quang Ngai reported deep fissures measuring 60m in length and 3-3.5m in depth at a height of 200m in mountains of the Son Tay District.

The province was urgently relocating 17 ethnic households living in the foot of the mountains to safer areas, and providing financial support of VND16 million for each family to build new houses.
