Australia Crop Estimate
The Australian rice industry is advertising new jobs in a turnaround which follows years of drought and job losses.

Last year's rice harvest of about 300,000 tonnes was the smallest in 30 years in Australia and it has seen the industry working hard to retain growers.

This season, thanks to more rain filling the storage dams, a crop of about a million tonnes is forecast.

Dozens of jobs are now on offer at rice mills at Leeton, Coleambally and Deniliquin. Sunrice chairman Gerry Lawson says it is good news for the Riverina-Murray region. "Full-time jobs, I think 89 is the number that we're seeking, I think that's great for the communities around. It's been difficult enough for the last few years," he said. Mr Lawson says the harvest will probably get under way in the next week or so in the Riverina and Murray rice growing regions. He says it is just what the industry needs after depressed prices and more than three years of drought.

Mr Lawson says the flow-on from a better rice crop will benefit the entire region. "It's not really just the people who work directly for Sunrice. The service industries of course around the towns and regional cities that actually supply most of the input to the business that benefit as well," he said.
