ABB Grain says the year will be a beauty
CAPPING an eventful week for Australia's listed grain companies, ABB Grain said its full-year profit was likely to be 80 per cent higher than last year.

At its annual meeting in Adelaide yesterday, managing director Michael Iwaniw predicted ABB would earn $65 million to $67 million for the year ended September 30, up from $36.2 million last year.

Pointedly comparing his company to struggling rival AWB, Mr Iwaniw said ABB had secured record amounts of wheat last year to reinforce its position as the nation's second-biggest wheat marketer. "Our success … signals to the wider community that ABB is not a one-dimensional organisation," he said.

"Similarly, if … the wheat export legislation changes in the future, then because of ABB's infrastructure, existing strong relationship with international customers and supply chain capabilities, we believe we will be in a strong situation to market wheat successfully."

Mr Iwaniw's comments echoed those of GrainCorp chairman Don Taylor.

ABB shares closed 31˘ higher at $7.50 yesterday. GrainCorp shares closed 25˘ higher at $11.56. AWB shares closed 17˘ lower at $4.04.
