S. Korean Gov't to Keep Close Watch on Sale of Imported Rice
SEOUL, Feb 22 Asia Pulse - The government will mobilize 18,000 special monitors to detect any illegal circulation of imported rice as a limited amount of imports go on direct sale to consumers this year, the agriculture ministry said Wednesday.

The monitors will work with farmers and civic groups to watch over the entire sales distribution chain, it said. The first bags of imported rice are expected to be sold around late March.

The ministry said tracking of imported rice will start as soon as they are put on the bidding block by the Agriculture and Fisheries Marketing Corp. Observers will follow the rice through various sales stages until they reach the retail market.

"An emphasis will be on preventing cheaper imported rice from being disguised as locally-grown rice that can fetch more on the consumer market," a official said.

He added that the government will work to prevent rice imported for processed food plants from turning up on the supermarket shelves.

Under a deal signed with nine rice exporting countries in late 2004, South Korea is obliged to import 245,922 tons of rice this year. Of this, 34,429 tons must be sold directly to consumers.

Because lawmakers were slow to ratify the deal, South Korea is also required to import and sell another 22,557 tons of rice that should have been sold directly to consumers last year.

The country must increase rice imports gradually from 4 per cent of the total market in 2004 to 7.96 per cent by 2014.

The agriculture ministry said violators could face stiff fines and even criminal charges, while those that report any violation could receive rewards of up to 2 million won (US$2,050).
