Taiwan Agricultural Technical Mission makes breakthrough in rice cultivat
The Taiwanese Technical Mission based in Sapu specialised in the cultivation of rice has extended its operations to the Northern part of the Central River Division.
The team has established a tidal irrigation system in the area that will enable farmers to grow rice and other crops throughout the year.

A senior agricultural specialist in the mission, Dr Chau said the technical team together with the farmers will reclaim 370 hectares and that six villages are benefiting from this scheme with about 2,000 families to benefit from the scheme.
Dr Chau described the extension of tidal irrigation to the northern part of the Central River Division as important and timely, as he puts it “the area is very important for rice production.”In the light of this, he added, the mission has been giving skills and information to farmers on the use of tidal irrigation system. He disclosed that this new scheme in the area will accomodate over 4,000 farmers who will benefit from the project and each will be able to cultivate 24-26 hectares of land.

The senior agricultural specialist noted that the project will help the farming community in CRD north to get money from the proceeds of their production to take care of the needs of their families and make savings. “ This is important to us because our aim in The Gambia is to help the country attain food self-sufficiency and help the farmers to save money to eradicate poverty,” he said.

He said the project that started in the area last year was financed at the tune of US$20,000 by the Taiwanese government. According to him, they have been using heavy machines in the preparation of the land , securing high production seeds to the farming community, to be supplied to farmers. He added that the farmers will be exposed to the new technology of rice production, as a result, sensitisation meetings were held with farmers in the area on how to cope with the new technology in meeting the needs of the country.
