Turkey-US fail to reach agreement on rice trade
The US have filed an appeal before the World Trade Organization (WTO) against Turkey, complaining about Turkey’s legal arrangements to protect domestic production of rice thus banning imports of American rice.

Turkey applies the system of tariff quota in rice imports in order support local producers and ensure that the volume of rice import corresponds to the amount of “rice deficit” in the country and claims that the customs and import duties applied are in compliance with WTO rules.
Officials of the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs stated that measures of protection of domestic rice production is Turkey’s most natural right and that Turkey imports more than 200.000 tons of rice every year.

The appeal will reportedly be discussed at a relevant panel to be organized by WTO, where both countries will defend their views through their lawyers. The panel is expected to be held within the next 6 months. If Turkey is found wrong, it will have to give up its relevant measures. In addition, the US will be able to request indemnity from Turkey.
