Calrose Medium Grain Market,
Farm and Trade
The market continues to be in a standoff of as buyers attempt to stay away from the open market in a stalling/hopeful attempt to suck prices downward while most growers look to hold strong/long during this expected period. Statistically, remains impossible to get to new crop with any real supplies/carry over and this is truly the shortest year in history especially when increase in demand is considered. The biggest news is that the Korea tender was rejected this week, which is a very positive note. Besides this indicating supplies are low as bidders are reluctant to sell cheap, there is some strong indications that buyers bids will increase in upcoming bids. The upcoming export business (done under tenders) is as follows: Korea on Feb 9 for milled rice, Japan on Feb 10 for milled, Korea on Feb 15 for brown, and Korea on Feb 24 for brown. Of some side interest, new crop planting/production looks to be more normal in the coming year, although pressure by bankers, the extremely low recent final pool payment for the '04 crop, and weather look to limit supplies. Furthermore, we must note that current rain cycle continues to follow 1982/83 (historic wetness) and this could have a major effect on new crop production. Lastly, Korea set to workout Free Trade Agreement with US in the near future.
