Trade showdown looms as S.Korea tells US: "No rice"
South Korea said on Friday that rice should be excluded from a free trade pact with the United States, drawing a line in the debate on one of the most sensitive areas of upcoming talks between the economic powerhouses.

Washington and Seoul appear to be heading for a showdown on the issue even before the opening of formal negotiations on a free trade agreement, which is expected in May.

The chief U.S. agricultural negotiator said on Wednesday that Seoul must open its long-protected rice market under any deal.

But a top South Korean agriculture official said on Friday that the country was not going to back down on its demand for rice to be exempted.

"We will keep our principle of not giving up the rice market in the free trade talks with U.S.. The idea of being self-sufficient in rice has long been part of the national sentiment," Kim Duck-ho, director of Agriculture Ministry's free trade talks bureau told Reuters by telephone.

"The United States knows quite well that rice is a very sensitive issue in South Korea. If Washington keeps demanding the opening of the country's rice market, a free trade agreement between two countries would be very difficult to reach," another official of the ministry said.

Analysts said agriculture will be one of the toughest sectors for negotiation in the trade deal, especially because of intense opposition from South Korean farmers to liberalization.
