U.S. Will Press Korea to Open Rice Market
The U.S. will demand that Korea opens its rice market when the two countries negotiate a free trade agreement, according to the chief agricultural negotiator at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
Richard Crowder on Wednesday told reporters in Washington the U.S. will want Korea to abandon protectionist measures for local rice producers, quipping, ˇ°a free-trade agreement means free trade.'' The agreement will be comprehensive, Bloomberg quoted Crowder as adding.
Meanwhile, Crowder told the U.S. National Cattlemen's Beef Association on Feb. 3 duty-free access for U.S. beef to the Korean market would be top on his list of priorities. Korea in the run-up to FTA negotiations agreed to resume some beef imports from the U.S. and cut a screen quota protecting the domestic film industry.
