Harvest in Brazil is expected to reach 124.4 milllion tonnes of grains
Brasília and São Paulo - The 2005/06 grain crop will be a record, according to estimates made by the National Supply Company (Conab). The harvest should reach 124.4 million tonnes of grains, 10.5 million tonnes more than in the previous season. Since the 1990/91 crop, agricultural production has increased 66.6 million tonnes, corresponding to a 115.2% increase in grain output.

"This shows the clear continued growth trend of Brazilian production," Conab president Jacinto Ferreira declared yesterday. This was the third survey of the crop realized by Conab. According to this latest study, grain production will be a little less than was indicated by the second forecast, disclosed in December. On that occasion, Conab forecast production of 124.9 million tonnes. Contributing to the smaller crop, the area planted diminished 4.3% in relation to 2004/05, dropping from 48.9 million hectares to 46.8 million in this season. Despite the expectation of an increased grain supply, corn prices negotiated on the domestic market remain stable. Farmers have premonitions that the decline in output will be greater than was forecast. According to Ferreira, though, the 124 million tonnes will not be reached only if climatic conditions change. The Conab president recalled that there have been many localized production losses, due to weather problems. "We already know of various factors, like the area planted, rains, amount of fertilizer used, contributing to change the final result," he said. © 2006 NoticiasFinancieras - Gazeta Mercantil - All rights reserved
