S. Korea will disclose rice production data to cope with imports
South Korea plans to release rice production forecasts on a regular basis as the country prepares for an influx of foreign imports, the government said Thursday.

The forecasts, to be announced from September, will cover expected output, existing stocks and shipments to markets, as well as rice harvest and price data in other countries, including the United States and China.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said the regular reports should permit farmers and consumers to better gauge market conditions and prevent sharp prices fluctuations.

""The regular disclosure of data on a monthly or quarterly basis could illuminate policy uncertainties that caused wholesale rice prices to fall off by around 9 percent in 2005 compared to the year before,"" a ministry official said.

Experts said planned sales of imported rice and changes to the way the government protected the rice market last year caused prices to fall, which could also occur in 2006.

Seoul said 22,557 tons of rice will hit the consumer market in March and April, with more to be imported later in the year.

The ministry said that the data will be collected from farmers, rice processing companies and consumers, so a comprehensive picture of supply and demand can be drawn.

It said the regularly provided information can help local farmers and rice processing plants to time shipments to meet consumer demand and get a good price.
