DJ CBOT Rice Review: Modestly Higher On Position Squaring
Rough rice futures traded at the Chicago Board of Trade ended modestly higher Friday, supported by position squaring and light speculative buying in quiet activity, a floor source said.

March rice gained 4 1/2 cents to $8.37 1/2 per hundredweight, May rice rose 4 cents to $8.63, and July rice also ended up 4 cents to $8.84.

Light position squaring by local traders and thin speculative buying after Thursday's declines, helped steady rice futures in an otherwise featureless session, a floor broker said. Light selling, thought to be commercial related, limited the gains as did a lack of commodity fund buying, he added.

On technical charts, March rice traded an inside day with Friday's trading range contained within Thursday's high and low. March finished above its 10-day and 20-day moving averages.

For the week, March rice settled unchanged from the previous Friday.

In other rice news, Thailand's government will sell 700,000 metric tons of its rice reserves to local exporters on Tuesday, a senior government official said Friday.

The rice sold at the tender has to be exported, said Rachane Potjanasuntorn, director-general at the Department of Foreign Trade.

The rice was collected under the previous intervention program, Rachane said.

The Thai rice supply situation is tight, as farmers have sold almost all their paddy rice from the current 2005-06 main crop in the market and to the government under its current intervention program while the second crop has not yet arrived in the market, Rachane said.

Asian cash rice prices were steady to mixed Friday, with prices higher in Thailand on tight domestic supplies.

In Vietnam, prices were steady ahead of the Tet or Lunar Holiday next week.
