The Philippines can potentially hit the 20-metric ton (MT) per hectare mark in hybrid rice
The Philippines can potentially hit the 20-metric ton (MT) per hectare mark in hybrid rice yield to beat China’s 18.4 MT record as it may have already developed the "right" variety and has the agronomic conditions this rice calls for.

"We haven’t yet released SL-9, but we’ve distributed it for testing to some farmers. It has more grains at 450 grains per panicle (compared to other varieties’ 350 to 400). There are areas it can really be suitable. Hopefully we can hit 20 tons this dry season," said Henry Lim Bon Liong, SL Agritech Corp. (SLAC) chairman and chief executive officer, in an interview.

Among the Philippines’ highest hybrid rice yielder is Aida Badong of Baao, Camarines Sur who harvested on a crop cut (estimate) 17.2 MT per hectare.

But another high yield from a farmer in San Jose, Nueva Ecija, Fernando Gabuyo who reaped 16.7 MT per hectare wants to challenge the record.

"He wants to break Aida’s harvest. I told him if you can do it, I’ll congratulate you. This will be like winning in the SEA Games," Lim said.

Hybrid rice has been proven to give a good yield even in adverse conditions.

Traditionally known as a tobacco or tomato-producing province, Ilocos Norte came up with a high yield through farmer Eddie Agustin, 55 and winner of "Gintong Butil" Award (GBA), with his 9.063 MT per hectare in the last dry season.

A farmer for the last 33 years harvesting only about four MT per hectare with inbred rice, Agustin struck a high yield by just "following instructions" on how to plant the more precise rice variety.

Mayor Renato Paulino of Calintaan, Mindoro’s winning the GBA for his 13.73 MT per hectare yield is doing something good not only for him but for the entire town.

"This is really what’s good for farmers. It’s our priority project in Calintaan. We already have 2,000 hectares planted on hybrid rice. We hope all irrigated rice land will be planted on it in two years," Paulino said in an interview during the awarding.

Calintaan has total rice land of 5,000 hectares.

For most farmers, awesome about hybrid rice is its harmony with organic fertilizer with which it yields higher. Paulino used three urea bags, one triple 14 fertilizer, two 16-20, and five bags of organic fertilizer in his farm.

Another awardee, an aeronautical engineer, Freddie Dalisay, 32, chose to plant hybrid rice with the higher income this gives. On his 10-hectare land in San Jose, Mindoro Occidental, he harvested an average of 14.57 MT per hectare.

"With inbred, I was just harvesting 100 plus cavans (five MT) per hectare. For my last three croppings with hybrid rice yield has been different," Dalisay said.
