Calrose Medium Grain Market
The year is off to a blazing start with US medium grain demand estimated (by USDA) at 42% ahead of last year (milled rice alone is 88% ahead). Take this with China being withdrawn from the market, Egypt being greatly stained by demand with booked sales over 50% of yearly export estimates, and Australia having its worst crop/lowest supplies in thirty years. All together, it is easy to see that the current pace of sales cannot continue as the small size of the US crop (around 44 million cwts) will quickly force customers to be sent away due to lack of supplies. Taken a step further, reports of heavy carry-in supplies are illogical after the Oct 1 USDA report showed only 4.4 million cwts of old and new crop paddy in warehouses. With several players only having enough supplies to go a short portion of the year (under normal rather than this heightened pace), activity is likely to be intense. Additionally the recent attempt to push price perception downward is likely short lived as there is simply not enough supplies to get through the year. Barring some major event, the Korean rice agreement looks to soon be approved. This would put into a rather quick tender schedule to catch up to commitments. Delivery may shift to a latter time frame, which would allow for easier logistics flow with Japan being so active in the early part of the year. Milled rice is now called between $22-$26.00/ccwt with $23.50 being the average. On the high side this is +$7.00/cwt over loan and on the low it is +5.00/cwt over. Milled rice prices are called up in the coming months...
