Russian and Ukrainian wheat trying to get hold of Egyptian market

According to the opinion of traders and analysts of industry associations who have been inquired by APK-Inform, Russian wheat in this season is pushing off traditional suppliers of grain to the Egyptian market.

The data of Russian Grain Union show that in August 2005 a quarter of Russia's total wheat exports went to Egypt. Traders and millers, working on the markets of Arabian countries, believe that in 2005/06 MY Russia might supply about 2 million tonnes of wheat to the Egyptian market.

For all that, the positions of Russia's main competitors on the Egyptian market - France, Australia and the US - are very strong and Russia will have to have to do its best to rip its bit of the market from western suppliers of grain.

The situation with Ukrainian grain is more difficult. According to market insiders and analysts, Ukraine will still have to go a good deal of the way that Russia has already had past. The reasons for this are numerous: for one thing, quality of Ukrainian grain is traditionally lower. Besides, the amount of crop in this country is extremely weather-sensitive…
