Texas rice acreage down, yield up
Rice production accounted for almost $17 million dollars in agricultural income for Matagorda County in 2004, said Brent Batchelor county extension agent on Thursday.

Batchelor gave an economic review of rice production at the annual Rice Producer’s Luncheon held at the Bay City Civic Center to honor the rice producer of the year and agribusiness of the year.

Last year there was roughly 22,000 acres of rice crop planted, which is historically down from previous years, said Batchelor.

However the barrel yield per acre is going up, meaning that rice farmers are able to get more crops using less land.

Rice farmers measure their yields by using a barrel system and each barrel is roughly 162 pounds of rice.

This year there were 50 barrels per acre harvested — which is much higher than the 33 barrels per acre harvested in the early 1990s, said Batchelor.

“They are trying to make cuts and be more productive with the amount of land they have,” said Batchelor.

New varieties of rice and better management of land has also helped local farmers be more productive, said Batchelor.

Rice contributes almost $1 billion to the Texas economy each year, and rice grown in Texas accounts for more than 2 percent of the word’s rice crop. Overall, Matagorda County makes almost $100 million in annual agricultural income with rice the No. 1 cash crop.

Also, rice can’t be farmed on the same land continuously year after year, which is leading some area farmers to turn to beef cattle.
