International Rice Year launched in Vietnam
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development joined with the United Nations Agriculture and Food Organisation (FAO) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to launch the International Year of Rice 2004 in Hanoi on Monday.

Rice is the staple diet of more than half of the world's population, and is grown in 113 countries, with a total area of 150 million ha under cultivation and a combined annual output of 600 million tonnes.

According to FAO, world rice demand in 2003 was 38% higher than the average output of the remaining years of the 20th century, even though rice production was greatly affected by water shortage, land degradation and pressures from an increasing population.

The UN has chosen "Rice is Life" as the theme for the International Year of Rice to highlight the importance of rice to life.

Addressing the launching ceremony, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong said Vietnam ranks fifth among the 10 largest rice producers in the world, with 7.5 million ha under rice cultivation and an annual output of 34.5 million tonnes.

Rice production in the country has been expanded over the past 20 years, with annual increases of nearly 1 million tonnes in output and 2 tonnes per ha in productivity," he said.

This has helped the country ensure its food supply for 80 million people and maintain an export volume of between 3.5-4 million tonnes of rice every year, he stressed.

The Deputy Minister said in response to the International Rice Year, Vietnam is willing to share its experiences in rice farming and expand international co-operation in this field. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has set up a committee to co-ordinate activities in the Year, including a Mekong basin conference on rice, a rice farming contest, a rice cooking festival, and an exhibition on scientific and technological advances in rice cultivation.
