Vetnamese rice export peaks at 4.3mil tons
According to the Trade and Service Department of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, by the end of September, Vietnam has exported 4.3 mil tonnes of rice, the highest volume so far compared to the same periods of the previous years.
Statistics data of Customs and exporters also show that rice export has strongly increased in volume, prices and revenues. The export turnover is $410 mil higher of that in the same period of the last year, of which $160mil is because of higher prices and $250mil by higher quantity.
Major importers include Philippines with 1.5mil tons, African countries with 760,000 tons, Cuba 600,000 tons. A new market, Iran, has also imported 300,000 tons from Vietnam.
Current prices are favorable to exporters and farmers. By the end of September, the 5% broken rice is priced at $265 per ton, the 10% broken rice is priced at $263, and the 25% broken rice is $255 per ton. Occasionally, contracts can be signed at $279 per ton.
According to the Vietnam Food Association, local enterprises have signed contracts on exporting 4.7mil tons of rice. The domestic supply is sufficient for export this year, thanks to a bumper crop in both the northern and the Mekong Delta. The main harvest in the Mekong Delta yields 600,000 tons higher than that of last year.
Vietnam's rice quality has been improved considerably, thus allowing higher prices. Most recently, a "tough market" as Japan has imported 90,000 tons of scented rice, and has listed Vietnam in nations that can regularly export rice to Japan.
