Barly improved prospects in Canada and Australia
Despite a 1-million-tonne increase from last month, forecast barley production in 2005-06, at 137 million tonnes, remains substantially below last year’s 152 million.

Since July, prospects improved in Canada and Australia. No change is made to the E.U. estimate of 53 million tonnes, which is 8 million tonnes below last year’s record, but there is evidence that this season’s unfavorable weather affected malting barley quality in some member states.

World barley consumption in 2005-06 is put at 141 million tonnes, slightly less than last month, and 6 million less than in 2004-05. Feed use in Ukraine is limited by smaller cattle and pig numbers, but stronger meat exports by Australia are boosting feed barley demand there.

The forecast of world barley trade is unchanged at 17 million tonnes, the same as last year. Malting barley shipments by Australia and Canada are likely to be large.

World barley stocks at the end of 2005-06 are projected at 23 million tonnes compared with 27 million last year. The forecast is 2 million tonnes higher than July’s because of the improved crop prospects in Canada and Australia.
