Vietnam's rice export to rise this year
Vietnam's rice export revenue is expected to surge 27.5 percent to nearly 1.2 billion US dollars this year, partly due to increasing prices in the world market, the Vietnam Food Association said Tuesday.

Vietnamese rice in early August increased by 25-40 US dollars per ton depending kinds of rice compared with late last year.

The price is likely to keep on rising because of thinner world supplies, the association predicted.

Vietnam exported 106,600 tons of rice worth more than 27.1 million dollars in the first week of this month, with their average price per ton being 18 dollars higher than that in the previous week. On average, one ton of Vietnamese rice in the Asian market is now priced at 255 dollars for 5-percent broken rice, 253 dollars for 10-percent broken rice, 245 dollars for 15-percent broken rice, and 236 dollars for 25-percent broken rice.

Vietnam has so far this year signed contracts on exporting 4.2 million tons of rice, over 3.2 million tons of which have already been delivered. Recently, the Vietnamese government removed this year's 3.8-million ton cap it had placed on rice export to ensure food security, due to the country's better-than-expected rice crops.

Vietnam, the world's second biggest rice exporter after Thailand, sold overseas more than 3.1 million tons of rice worth 869 million dollars in the first 7 months of this year, representing year-on-year respective rises of 13.4 percent and 35. 9 percent. It shipped abroad slightly more than 4 million tons of the commodity last year, mainly to the Asia-Pacific region, Africa and the Middle East, the association said.
