The Bangladesh develops two new rice varieties
The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed two new rice varieties named BRRI dhan44 and BRRI dhan45 recently for cultivation in the Aman and Boro seasons.

BRRI dhan44 can be cultivated like BR 11 in the normal transplant Aman season and it is tolerant to tidal submergence in the southern part of the country covering 0.8 million hectares. The yield of BRRI dhan44 is 4.5 metric tonnes/ha that is 1 tonne/ha more than that of BR 11.

The yield of BRRI dhan45 is 5.5 metric tonnes/ha that is 0.5 metric tonnes/ha more than that of BRRI dhan28, a popular Boro variety. Its stem is strong enough to keep the rice plant upright even during stormy weather.

The seed of the new varieties will be available to farmers from the next Boro and Aman seasons.

BRRI has already developed 45 modem rice varieties. These varieties are cultivated in 70 per cent of the total rice areas of the country and contribute 80 per cent to the total rice production.

In 1970-71, the total rice production was 10.97 million tonnes. By 2003-04, it has increased to 26.19 million tonnes. This has been possible mainly due to BRRI's developing of modem rice varieties and technologies, extension activities and the efforts of our toiling farmers. The scientists hope, the newly developed rice varieties will meet the long-term consumer demand, contribute substantially to increase rice production and ensure food security of the country.
