Slovak intervention agency stops buying grain from 2004 harvest
Slovak Agricultural Payments Agency has stopped intervention purchases of grain from last year's harvest, farm minister Zsolt Simon told reporters today.

"We handled purchases from last year's harvest with success, we bought 505,000 tonnes [of grain]. We are now completing the required statistical documents that we will submit to Brussels," he added.

Farmers offered 642,340 tonnes of grain. The agency rejected almost 140,000 tonnes due to poor quality.

Slovakia will try to sell the grain obtained in the purchases in EU tenders or place it on other markets.

The country has so far succeeded in tenders to export 121,454 tonnes of wheat and declared a tender for 100,000 tonnes of maize.

Another 84,754 tonnes of maize should be exported to third countries.

"If we manage to sell the whole amount on foreign markets, the European Commission will pay Slovakia Sk800-900 million for storage...and transport, depending on where the sale takes place," said Simon.

He added this year's harvest would be 15-20 percent lower than last year's record-high 1.76 million tonnes of grain. Farmers have harvested grain from 70 percent of total grain area up to now.

"Last year brought an extreme record, this year's harvest is average," said Simon. He also rejected concerns that Slovakia may not have enough storage capacity.
